If you are not a lipreader

If you are not a lipreader you may benefit from other forms of communication support. All registered Professional Aids to Communication work to a professional code of practice, which includes a requirement for confidentiality.

Speech to Text Reporters

A Speech to Text Reporter uses machine shorthand equipment, like a stenographer or court reporter, to provide a verbatim transcript of a meeting or conference. The words are typed and instantly appear on a laptop, television or overhead projection screen for hard of hearing people to read. There are also electronic notetakers, Speedtext operators and notetakers available for communication support.

British Sign Language Interpreters

Many Deaf people use British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language and need to use interpreters who speak both English and BSL in meetings and at conferences. The interpreter communicates with the Deaf person in BSL and then translates the conversation or speech into spoken English for the hearing person and vice versa in a conversation.

Sign Supported English Interpreters

Some Deaf and hard of hearing people prefer to use Sign Supported English (SSE). This is a combination of signs from British Sign Language (BSL) together with English Grammer. Unlike BSL it is not an independant language and the balance of English to BSL signs varies depending on the preference of the Deaf or hard of hearing person.

Cued Speech Transliterators

Cues Speech Transliterators (CST) support users of Cued Speech, a sound based system using handshapes in conjunction with lip patterns of spoken English.
